This week I am giving you tips on Motorsports Photography. The boys and I love to go to Mud Races, Monster Truck Shows and Boat Races. I won’t say I am the best, but I do enjoy taking them and catching the action.
Look Around
You do not want a bunch of porta-potties in your background. Also see which way the cars, trucks will be coming so you can get the right position. You don’t really worry about this if you are at a Monster Truck show since you have to stay in your seat.
Panning
You will want to pan with the moving vehicle. I talked about Panning Photos on tutorial tuesday previously.
Shutter speeds & Aperture Setting
You will want a shutter speed of at least 1/250. That way the trucks, cars, boats will be in focus. You want to be able to have a high shutter speed with low ISO so you kind of will need to play with this. It also depends which lens you are using. My settings for this photo was | ISO 500 | f/4 | 1/200. Didn’t get to the 250 but I was close. Next time I may even try out Shutter Priority.
Multiple Shots
I always, always, always take multiple shots at one time. That way you can pick the best one when you load them on your computer. If you do this hopefully you won’t miss any action. This is also great for making .GIF images or storyboards.
If you are walking around and taking photos at motosports activities make sure you are always aware of your surroundings. You never know if something is going to happen and they could lose control.
