Carsyn will be 7 in a couple months and I can’t remember very many times that he hasn’t had problems with his digestion. He eats a good variety of foods but because of his high muscle tone sometimes he has problems going to the bathroom. It is a very common problem for kids with cerebral palsy. So today I wanted to share a few things we have been doing to improve his digestive health.
Digestive Health Tips for Kids with Cerebral Palsy
Take a good probiotic
Probiotics are provide good bacteria that are essential for many vital body functions, including healthy digestion.
We love the new chewable probiotic from Align for kids called Align Jr. I love that it is chewable since Carsyn can not swallow pills. It is a tasty cherry flavor so I have had no problems with him taking it.
Increase Fluid Intake
Make sure they get plenty of fluids in their diet.
Eat Fiber Rich Foods
Offer a lot of green vegetables, beans, high fiber cereals, etc. His favorites are oatmeal and berries.
Daily Stomach Massage
Very gently massage the stomach in small circular clockwise motions around the navel. He really enjoys this part and laughs so much.
We all know that as parents our mornings are busy and stressful. Also kids don’t always have a perfectly balanced diet, which may disrupt your kids’ natural balance of good bacteria. A great choice is to offer your kids a daily probiotic supplement like Align Jr. which can help support your child’s digestive health.* Align Jr., contains the unique pure-strain probiotic BifantisTM (Bifidobacterium infantis 35624). Align Jr. probiotics come in the bubble packs to keep them fresh for longer.
