This DIY colorful wax drip pumpkin decoration is fun, cheap, easy and beautiful when finished, which in my book, makes all the elements to a great craft project! As simple as this project is, you can definitely get the kiddos involved in at least part of the process. Depending on the ages, you may want to involve them in different parts. Younger children might have fun arranging the colors on the pumpkin, while an older child could be a help during the melting process. Just make sure they are careful not to get the hair dryer too close to the pumpkin or the wax could splatter.
Colorful Crayon Drip Pumpkin
Supplies:
- White pumpkin
- Crayons in rainbow colors (or whatever color palette you choose. I am thinking of doing another one in purple and orange)
- Hair dryer
- Paper plate
- Scissors
Begin by cutting lengths from your crayons (or finding already broken ends) that are approximately 1/2″-3/4″. I used a mini pumpkin (94¢ at the grocery store!). If your pumpkin is bigger, use larger lengths of crayon. The pieces should cover the top of the pumpkin when placed lengthwise. Cut each piece in half lengthwise. This will allow the crayon pieces to lay flat on the pumpkin top and they will be less likely to fall off or roll out of place while you are melting them.
Place the pumpkin on a paper plate, then place the crayons onto the top of the pumpkin, flat sides down, in the order you want them. We did it in rainbow order, so ROY G BIV (actually, we had a lot of rills in the pumpkin, so we added pink, light orange and yellow-green to our rainbow). Use your blow dryer on high temp low fan setting to melt the crayons. It will take 30 -60 seconds to start melting, but be patient! If you get too close to the crayons with the dryer before they are at least partially melted, they can blow right off. If a crayon does blow off onto the paper plate, just pick it up and put it back in its spot.
I just love how the wax mingled together as it melted.
I love how ours turned out! I hope you enjoy this fun, simple and beautiful little craft.
